The 2021 Breeders’ Cup is here, being held at Del Mar for just the second time, with the two-day event taking place on Friday Nov. 5 and Saturday Nov. 6.
We have 14 championship races with $31 million in purses up for grabs. For horseplayers it is the holy grail of wagering, with guaranteed betting pools that will include Pick 5 and Pick 6 wagering over the two days of action.
The highlight is the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) which likely will decide Horse of the Year honors. Trainer Brad Cox is loaded with top contenders Knicks Go and Essential Quality while Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert will saddle the Kentucky Derby “winner” Medina Spirit.
Knicks Go is the early betting favorite for the Classic. The five-year-old has won three in a row, taking the Lukas Classic (G3) at Churchill Downs in his final prep. Stablemate Essential Quality has won eight of his nine career starts including the Belmont Stakes (G1) and Travers (G1).
The $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) headliner is the streaking Letruska, who has won five in a row, taking the Spinster (G1) at Keeneland in her last outing. She will face a tough group that will include Alabama (G1) winner Malathaat, Cotillion (G1) winner Clairere and Locust Grove (G3) champ Sharesharesthedevil.
