Arlington Park was opened in 1927 and quickly became a staple on the horse-racing circuit. It was the first track to utilize a public announcer, and was also the first to use the photo finish. Arlington hosted the first million-dollar race in history in 1981, the Arlington Million, commemorated by a statue of the great Bill Shoemaker, who won that race. Arlington also held the 2002 Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships.
Arlington Park was gutted by a massive fire in 1985, but still managed to host the Arlington Million shortly after. It re-opened in 1989, before another closure in 1998. The track was re-opened after a purchase by Churchill Downs Inc.
