Santa Anita Park opened on Christmas Day 1934 and is the oldest racetrack in Southern California. The track’s most famous race, the Santa Anita Handicap, was first run in February 1935 with a $100,000 purse. At the time it was the largest purse in any race.
Santa Anita is credited with introducing many innovations to the horse racing world that are now commonplace, including the use of starting gates and photo finishes. In 1940 the Santa Anita Handicap was the last race run by Seabiscuit before he went into retirement. Seabiscuit won the race, making another legendary surge at the end of the race.
Today Santa Anita is known for offering some of the best races in America during the fall and winter seasons. Santa Anita offers some of the highest purses in the world, a tradition it established with the first Santa Anita Handicap.
