Emerald Downs opened as Longacres back in 1932, but became the new and improved venue in 1996. It consists of a one-mile dirt oval.
The Washington State track’s biggest race is the Longacres Mile Handicap, a Grade three event founded by Joe Gottstein in 1935 to highlight mile runners.
The inaugural running of the Longacres Mile featured a New Orleans horse named Biff, who was the grandson of legendary Man O’ War. Though favored, he was beaten by 20-1 longshot Coldwater in that first running of the race.
Emerald Downs was the first track on the West Coast based on pari-mutuel wagering.
