The $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) has produced chalky results in the last two years and it could be more of the same this year.
Gamine is seeking to defend her title and is going to be a heavy favorite in what is projected to be a small field. The Bob Baffert trainer paid $4.20 last year.
The defending champion is less than even money in early Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint wagering at BUSR. She comes into this year’s race riding a five race winning streak, taking the Ballerina Handicap (G1) at Saratoga in her last outing on Aug. 28.
Last year Gamine won the race off a two-month break, rebounding off a third-place finish in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) going 1 1/8 miles. She was later disqualified after testing positive for betamethasone, an anti-inflammatory medication.
Covfefe paid just $5.00 two back after we saw a series of four straight upsets that included Bar of Gold paying $135.40 at Del Mar in 2017.

Favorites have managed to win this race five times in 14 editions including the last pair. Groupie Doll is the lone two-time winner of the race and paid just $3.40 for her first win, the shortest price in history. The $2 exacta paid just $12.00.
Gamine is seeking to become the second two-time winner of the Filly & Mare Sprint and paid $4.20 last year. We saw the second lowest exacta last year, paying just $16.20.
There has been just one wire winner of the race, Finest City getting the job done in 2016 at Santa Anita and paying $19.40.
With this race at seven furlongs (The Sprint for the boys is at six) it is important to have a win at the distance and 11 of the 14 have.
Three-year-olds had not won this race in the first 11 editions and now have taken the last three. Five-year-olds have done well, winning four times and Maryfield won the first running at the age of six.
7 of the 14 winners of the race have won at least one Grade 1, including the last two who both won the Test (G1) at seven furlongs.
The biggest upset in the history of the race happened at Del Mar in 2017. Bar of Gold returned her backers $135.40 on a $2 win ticket and topped a $2 exacta that paid $2,060.40.

She had run sixth in the Spinster (G1) at Keeneland in her prior start. She did run well in a runner up finish in the Presque Isle Downs Masters (G2) a race that has produced six Filly & Mare Sprint winners. That race is contested over a synthetic racing surface at 6 ½ furlongs.
The second biggest upset came in 2018 with Shamrock Rose paying $53.80 and the $ exacta returning $720.00 with Chalon (14-1) the runner up. Shamrock Rose had won her three previous starts, taking the Raven Run (G2) at Keeneland in her final prep.
Post positions have not been much of a factor, with two winners breaking from the 11, one from the 12 post and one from the 14 post. Gamine broke from the two post last year and Covfefe drew the rail. This year’s field is expected to be smaller than average.
