Kentucky Derby Future Odds: Honor Code Early Favorite

The Run for the Roses is still five months away, but Kentucky Derby Future Wagering is underway, with future odds being released by Bovada.

The current favorite is the Shug McGaughey trained Honor Code, who was beaten just a neck in the Champagne (G1) at Belmont Park on October 5 in his stakes debut. The colt broke his maiden in his debut, one of the most impressive debuts at the Saratoga meeting this summer.

Second choice in the betting odds released by Bovada is New Year ’s Day, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) in his third career start.

The Bob Baffert trainee pulled off the upset in the Juvenile, returning his backers $23.00 for a $2 wager, and was the top pick in the race by Turf ‘n’ Sport handicapper Michael Dempsey.

The colt came into the Juvenile off a maiden win over polytrack at Del Mar in his second career outing for the Hall of Fame barn.

The Todd Pletcher trained Havana (20/1) was the beaten favorite in the Juvenile where he checked in third. The colt earned a 102 Beyer Speed Figure in his maiden win at Saratoga, and then won the Champagne by a neck over the late running Honor Code.

Also at 20/1 on the Bovada line is the Baffert trained Tap It Rich. The son of Tapit broke his maiden in his debut at Santa Anita on October 12 and came back to finish fifth in the Juvenile.

The D. Wayne Lukas trained Strong Mandate is listed at 30/1. The colt is a Grade 1 winner, taking the Hopeful at Saratoga on September 2, but came up short with a seventh in the Champagne and a third in the Juvenile.
