Aintree Racecourse will host the most famous steeplechase race in the world when the field lines up on Saturday, April 6 in the John Smith’s Grand National.
The race is the marquee event of the three-day meeting at Aintree, with a field of forty jumpers expected to compete, making it one of the most exciting spectacles in all of sport.
What makes it even more exciting is getting a few wagers down on the famous race, which has been run since 1839. Punters send it in enthusiastically every year. Bookmakers estimate over $500 million is bet on the Grand National.
Last year’s winner was the 11-year-old Neptune Collonges, who went off at hefty odds of 33-1. The winner was trained by Paul Nicholls, who gave a leg up to winning rider Daryl Jacob.
The 2011 running was one of the most exciting in history, with a nose separating the top two finishers, the closest finish in the 165-year history of the race. For Nichols it ended an 0 for 52 drought in the race.
Sunnyhillboy, trained by Jonjo O’Neill had the lead after the 30 jumps and had opened up a two length lead late but got leg weary, with Neptune Collonges getting up in the last jump for the victory.

Nichols is seeking a repeat of last year’s win, and his best hope this year is Join Together, who is currently listed at 16/1.
Early favoritism for the Grand National belongs to a trio of runners at 10/1: Seabass, On His Own and Prince De Beauchen.
Seabass, who is trained by Ted Walsh is the highweight and was third in the race last year. He was third in his last race on Feb. 23 in the At The Races Bobbyjo Chase.
On His Own is trained by W.P. Mullins and won his last race on Feb. 19, taking the Ladbrokes Boyne Hurdle at Navan in an upset.
Prince De Beauchen has won five of his 14 starts and was the runner up in the At The Races Bobbyjo Chase for trainer W.P. Mullins.
