Trainer Chad Brown topped the earnings list for trainers in 2016 for the first time while Javier Castellano led all jockeys in purse earnings for the fourth consecutive year.
Brown was second behind Todd Pletcher in 2014 and 2015 and got the top spot in 2016, his horses earning $23,135,084 in 2016. Brown won 182 races from his 763 starters.
Among his big wins in 2016 were New Money Honey in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, (G1) Flintshire in the Sword Dancer (G1) and Woodford Reserve Manhattan (G1), Sea Calisi in the Beverly D. (G1), Lady Eli in the Flower Bowl (G1), Dacita in the Diana (G1), , Practical Joke in the Champagne (G1) and Hopeful (G1), Beach Patrol in the Secretariat (G1), Wake Forest in the Man o’ War (G1), Annals of Time in the Hollywood Derby (G1) and Connect in the Cigar Mile Handicap (G1).
Todd Pletcher finished second in 2016 with his horses having won 274 races from 1,213 starts for earnings of $21,178,642.
Karl Broberg won the most races among trainers with 371, the third consecutive year he has led in wins.
Castellano led all jockeys in purses earnings for the fourth consecutive year with earnings of $26,827,966. He won 300 races from his 1,418 mounts during 2016.
Second in earnings was Irad Ortiz Jr. with $23,456,741. He won 313 races in 2016 from his 1,504 mounts.
Among Castellano’s big scores in 2016 were with New Money Honey in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1), Cathryn Sophia in the Kentucky Oaks (G1), Flintshire in the Sword Dancer (G1) and Woodford Reserve Manhattan (G1), Cavorting in the Personal Ensign (G1), Connect in the Cigar Mile Handicap (G1), Sweet Loretta in the Spinaway (G1), Annals of Time in the Hollywood Derby (G1) and Shaman Ghost in the Woodward (G1).
Jose Ortiz won the most races in 2016 among jockeys with 351 followed by Antonio Gallardo with 332.
