The undefeated Songbird drew the rail and was installed as the 6-5 morning line favorite for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) while California Chrome will break from the four post as the even money favorite in the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1).
The Distaff will be contested on Friday with three champions in the field. Songbird, undefeated in 11 career starts was last year’s Eclipse Award winner for top juvenile filly and won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).
Stellar Wind was last year’s three-year-old champion and is the co-second choice on the morning line at 5-2. She beat archrival Beholder in her last two starts, taking the Clement L. Hirsch (G1) and the Zenyatta (G1).
Beholder will break from the eight post and is the co-second choice at 5-2. She won the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and the 2013 Distaff.
Curalina, Forever Unbridled and I’m a Chatterbox are all at 12-1 on the morning line and each is a multiple Garde 1 winner.
Completing the field are longshots Corona Del Inca (30-1) and Land Over Sea (30-1).
Saturday’s Classic drew a field of 10 lead by California Chrome, the 2014 Horse of the Year after winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness (G1). He ran third in the Classic that year, beaten a neck for the top spot.
The Art Sherman trainee is perfect in six starts this year including three Garde 1 races. He has earned $7.1 million this year.
The Bob Baffert trained Arrogate drew the 10 post and was installed as the 5-2 second choice on the morning line.
The colt has just one start in stakes company, taking the Travers (G1) at Saratoga in August and earning a 122 Beyer Speed Figure, easily the highest produced by a three-year-old this year.
Frosted is the third choice on the morning line at 5-1. The colt won the Met Mile (G1) in June earning a 123, the highest number posted by any horse this year, and then won the Whitney (G1). In his final prep he was third in the Woodward (G1), beaten a neck.
Melatonin makes his first start since winning the Gold Cup at Santa Anita (G1) on June 25. The gelding is perfect in four starts over the main track at Santa Anita and is 6-1 on the morning line.
Last year’s Classic runner up Effinex is 15-1, as is Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) winner Hoppertunity.
Completing the field are Keen Ice (20-1), Win the Space (30-1), War Story (30-1) and Sharman Ghost (20-1).
