The undefeated Justify continues to be a strong favorite for next Saturday’s $1.5 million Belmont Stakes (G1) as he seeks to become the 13th Triple Crown winner.
We could see as many as 11 foes take on the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness (G1) winner at Belmont Park including the runner up and third place finishers from the Preakness.
Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert is seeking to win the Triple Crown for the second time in just three years. The trainer saddled 2015 Triple Crown winner American Phaorah, the first to sweep the three classics since Affirmed in 1978.
Justify is listed as the -115 betting favorite at USRacing and is now down to -145 at BetOnline.
Baffert and fellow Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas have each won 14 Triple Crown races, and there is a good chance the tie will be broken in Baltimore next Saturday.
Lukas sends out Preakness runner up Bravazo, who rallied in the slop and fog and came up just a half-length short of the winner at 15-1. The colt is the second choice in early Belmont Stakes wagering at USRacing at +430 while he is offering more value at BetOnline as the third choice at +750.
Another Hall of Fame trainer with a major contender is Bill Mott, who will send out Hofburg, the current third choice at USRacing at +700 while he has been bet down at BetOnline to second choice at +430.
The son of Tapit was second in the Florida Derby (G1) in his stakes debut and then had a troubled trip in a seventh-place finish in the Run for the Roses.
Preakness third place finisher Tenfold will be sent out by yet another Hall of Fame trainer in Steve Asmussen. The colt is +580 at USRacing and +875 at BetOnline. Bovada is offering the best value at +1000 in early Belmont betting.
The son of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin won his first two starts, then was fifth in the Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park. He was sent off at 26-1 in the Preakness and made a good late rally to finish third and was beaten just a neck for the runner up spot.
Trainer Todd Pletcher, who saddled last year’s Belmont winner Tapwrit will be represented by Vino Rosso and Noble Indy, who were ninth and 17th respectively in the Kentucky Derby.
Vino Rosso is getting more action of the pair, currently at +1100 at USRacing. Noble Indy can be had at +3300 at Bovada in early betting.
The post position draw for the Belmont Stakes is next Tuesday.
