Final Odds for Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 1

Churchill Downs

Churchill Downs hosts the 139th Kentucky Derby on May 4th

Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager closed on Sunday evening and to no surprise “All Others” is the favorite at 8-5, making it 15 years in a row that the mutual field was favored by future bettors.

“All Others” consists of all three-year-olds other than the 23 individual horses listed. The pool closed with $621,493 wagered, which was the second highest single-pool total in the bet’s 15-year history.

Second choice and top pick among the 23 separate betting interest was the Todd Pletcher trained Verrazano, who has not yet made his stakes debut. The son of More than Ready closed at 11-1 in the betting.

The Pletcher trainee broke his maiden in his debut on Jan. 1 and then beat first level optional claimers with a 105 Beyer Speed Figure on Feb. 2, both starts coming at Gulfstream Park. Pletcher has not indicated where the colt will make his stakes debut, possibly in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth on Feb. 23, the Grade 2 Gotham at Aqueduct on March 2 or perhaps the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby on March 9.

Pletcher has a total of seven three-year-olds among the 23 betting interests ion Pool 1. Next in line among the Pletcher runners were Revolutionary and Violence each at 13-1.

The Bob Baffert trained Flashback closed at 12-1, the second choice among the separate betting interests. The colt is perfect in his two starts, breaking his maiden in his debut on Dec. 8, and winning the Grade 2 Robert B. Lewis on Feb. 2. His next start likely will come in the Grade 2 San Felipe at Santa Anita Park on March 9.

Two pools remain in the 2013 Kentucky Derby Future Wager.  Pool 2 is set for March 1-3 and the year’s final pool is scheduled for March 22-24.
