Undefeated Gemologist Leads Wood Memorial Field at Aqueduct
A field of eight will line up on Saturday in the $1 million Resorts World Casino New York City Wood Memorial (G1) at Aqueduct, with the winner’s check of $600,000 guaranteeing a starting spot in the gate for the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 5.
There have been eleven winners of the Wood that have gone on to capture the Run for the Roses, and the undefeated Gemologist leads the promising filed this year hoping to make it a dozen.
The Todd Pletcher trainee is undefeated in four career start and is making just his second start this year.
His main competition figures to come from Gotham (G2) runner up My Adonis and Broad Brush winner Street Life.
The 1 1/8-mile Wood is the marquee event on an outstanding day of horse betting that includes the $400,000 Carter Handicap (G1), $250,000 Bay Shore (G3) and the $250,000 Comely (G3).
Post time for the eleven race card is 12:50 ET, with the Wood going off as the ninth race with a post time of 5:15 ET.
The Wood is the third leg of a $500,000 Guaranteed All Graded Stakes Pick 4, and will be shown live by NBC during a 90-minute telecast starting at 4:30 ET.
