Updated 2021 Belmont Stakes Betting Odds

With less than two weeks until the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes (G1) a field of as many as 13 is still possible and we have co-favorites in the updated betting odds.

Essential Quality and Rombauer are currently co-favorites at +250 (5-2) in the latest 2021 Belmont Stakes betting odds released by BUSR.

Essential Quality was the beaten favorite when fourth in the Kentucky Derby (G1) on May 1, his first career defeat. The Brad Cox trainee won his first five starts including preps in eh Southwest (G3) at Oaklawn Park and the Toyota Blue Grass (G2) at Keeneland.

Rombauer pulled off the upset in the Preakness Stakes (G1), coming with a four wide rally and drawing clear to win by 3 ½ lengths and returning his backers $25.60.

The Michael McCarthy trainee won the El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields and then was third in the Toyota Blue Grass in his two previous outings.

Flavien Prat rode Rombauer to his victory in the Preakness but has opted to stick with Hot Rod Charlie. McCarthy announced on Saturday that Hall of Fame rider John Velazquez will ride Rombauer in the Belmont Stakes.

Rombauer Wins the 2021 Preakness Stakes

Hot Rod Charlie is the current third choice in early Belmont Stakes betting at BUSR at +400. The Doug O’Neill trainee was third in the Kentucky Derby and skipped the Preakness.

The colt worked five furlongs in 1:01.60 under Prat Saturday at Santa Anita and the morning drill pleased his trainer.

“I was very happy with the breeze,” said O’Neill. “I got him in 1:01 and out (six furlongs) in 1:13 and change. He looked great. If all goes well, he’ll breeze again here Friday and get on a plane (to New York) on Saturday.”

Pletcher Still Has Four Possible

Trainer Todd Pletcher is looking to add to his three wins in the Belmont Stakes and may start as many as four in the third jewel of the Triple Crown.

Recently inducted into the Hall of Fame, Pletcher sent out Bourbonic, Known Agenda and Overtook on Friday morning for works. In addition, Peter Pan (G2) winner Promise Keeper has not been ruled out of the Belmont, although Pletcher said the Ohio Derby (G3) is more likely.

Known Agenda is listed at +700 in early Belmont Stakes odds at BUSR. The Florida Derby (G1) winner was a disappointing ninth I the Kentucky Derby.

Bourbonic pulled off the upset in the Wood Memorial (G2) but was 13^th in the Run for the Roses.

Overtook was second in the Withers (G3) and third in the Peter Pan (G2) in his last two outings.

“He’s a steady, one-run kind of horse and the Peter Pan didn’t develop with much pace. I thought considering that he actually ran pretty well,” said Pletcher. “I think having a race under his belt should help him. Of course, this will be a much more difficult task but he’s well-bred for the distance and we’re hoping that’s the key for him having success.”

Midnight Bourbon will skip the Belmont Stakes and be pointed toward the $1 million Haskell Invitational (G1) on July 17 at Monmouth Park or the $600,000 Jim Dandy (G2) on July 30 at Saratoga.

The post position draw for the Belmont Stakes will be Tuesday, June 1.
