UFC 257 Betting Preview: McGregor Solid Favorite

UFC 257

Conor McGregor is the favorite in UFC 257.

Mixed martial arts is a sport that has gained sportsbook followers very rapidly. And at the moment, there is arguably no one bigger in MMA then Conor McGregor, who isn’t even a UFC champion at the moment.

McGregor’s force of personality, not to mention the force of his blows, has skyrocketed him to worldwide fame. And he has done just about everything possible to capitalize on that, including crossing over the fight famous boxers like Floyd Mayweather. That bout drew 5.3 million pay-per-view followers in the US and the UK, and there may be another one of those on tap against Manny Pacquiao.

But first things first, and on the agenda is a significant fight on Saturday night, when he takes on Dustin Poirier at UFC 257, taking place in Abu Dhabi.

BetOnline is the premier sportsbook destination in the world for mixed martial arts wagering, and they have installed McGregor as a rather solid favorite in this one:

Conor McGregor -301
Dustin Poirier +251

Under 2.5 Rounds -200
Over 2.5 Rounds +160

McGregor, who was a two-division champion, has only fought once in the last 27 months, taking out Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in forty seconds. Prior to that, he lost on a fourth-round submission to Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was generally considered to be the top pound-for-pound competitor in the sport before announcing his retirement.

Poirier has challenged McGregor before; that was back in September 2014, when he admitted to allowing McGregor to get under his skin, leading to a first-round TKO loss on strikes. But the Cajun from Louisiana, who currently trains at American Top Team in Florida, gathered himself and climbed back up the ladder, finally winning the UFC interim lightweight title. At that point, however, he also ran into Khabib, who beat him on a submission in the third round in September 2019.

McGregor Has 19 Career Knockouts

McGregor is 22-4, with 19 knockouts, indicating that he can definitely do some damage with his hands. But he’s got only one submission on his record, while Poirier has seven, plus a dozen KO’s in his 26-6 career mark.

Aside from being able to bet on who’s going to win the fight itself, BetOnline has made available numerous options, as they give you an opportunity to place a wager on HOW the fight will be won and WHEN it will happen.

For example, McGregor is a -200 pick to win the fight inside the distance. That means he would have to be declared the winner before the end of the fifth round. On the other side, Poirier is + 400 to achieve the same. As part of this prop, you can get 3-1 odds (+ 300) that the fight will ultimately go to a decision.

BetOnline understands that its patrons want a lot of choices, and that they might want to do their own micro-analysis of this fight. So you can choose the “method of victory” as well. Here, we’ll give you the choices contained in the prop. As you’ll be able to see, there are options for either fighter to win by KO/TKO/DQ (disqualification), submission or on a points decision:

Conor McGregor by KO/TKO or DQ -200
Dustin Poirier by Points +550
Conor McGregor by Points +600
Dustin Poirier by KO/TKO or DQ +600
Dustin Poirier by Submission +1000
Conor McGregor by Submission +2500
Draw +6600

There are also odds on whether or not each of the individual rounds, beyond Round 1, is going to get underway. So, for instance, the price is -155 that Round 3 will not begin. Of course, if you are in the “no” category, you would be looking for somebody to win that fight within the first two rounds.

And speaking of rounds, you got the opportunity to bet on that as well.  What we mean is the exact round in which the outcome will be determined.

So if you like McGregor to win the fight in, say, Round 2, you can wager on that and if it wins, you’ll be paid at +350 odds. If Poirier wins in Round 2, you’ll get + 1400. You will see prices for both fighters to win in each of the five rounds.

And if you want to get even more specific, you can place a wager not only on which fighter will win, and in what round, but also by what method. Poirier is, for instance, +4000 to win by a submission in Round 3. McGregor is + 1800 to win by KO, TKO or DQ in Round 4. So just multiply the possibilities – two different methods, two different fighters, and five rounds. You can actually place multiple wagers within this same prop, which is labeled “Method + Round.”

So you get the idea; BetOnline is going to keep you occupied in a big way as the big fight approaches. This is all about their commitment to providing the most for its customers.
