Tiz the Law closed as the betting favorite in Pool 5 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager when wagering closed on Sunday, the colt a solid 2-1 betting favorite.
Total handle for Pool 5 was $337,607, with $219,946 wagered in the Win pool and $117,661 in Exacta pool. The Kentucky Derby, which is now the second jewel of the Triple Crown will be contested on Saturday, Sept. 5 at Churchill Downs.
The Triple Crown will close this year with the Preakness Stakes (G1) at Pimlico in Baltimore on Oct. 3.
The Barclay Tagg trained Tiz the Lawn won the Belmont Stakes (G1) on June 20, matching his career best Beyer Speed Figure of 100. The colt has won five of his six career starts. His lone loss came in a third-place finish in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) over the Churchill Downs main track last November.
His next start likely will come in the Travers (G1) at Saratoga on Aug. 8.
Belmont Stakes Replay
The colt is first in the Road to the Kentucky Derby points standings with 272. Honor A.P. is second in the standings with 120 points.
Honor A.P. closed as the second choice in the Pool 5 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager at 6-1. The John Shirreffs trainee won the Santa Anita Derby (G1) on June 6 in his last outing.
The mutual field of “All Others” closed as the third choice in the wagering in Pool 5 at 8-1.
Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who lost two major players in Nadal and Charlatan to injuries is still well represented in the early wagering.
Santa Anita Derby runner up Authentic is the fourth choice at 11-1. Baffert’s recent maiden winners Uncle Chuck is 13-1 and Cezzane is at 19-1.
Baffert’s Thousand Words closed at 47-1. The colt won the Los Alamitos Futurity (G1) and Robert B. Lewis (G3) but has been disappointing in his last two starts. He was fourth in the San Felipe (G2) and most recently faded to finish 11th in the Oaklawn Stakes on April 11.
There are two additional future wager pools. Pool 6 is scheduled for July 17-19, and Pool 7 will take place Aug. 7-9.
