The mutuel field or “All Others” is the 5-2 morning line favorite with Pool 1 of the 2017 Kentucky Derby Future Wager opening on Thursday.
Last November, “All Others” closed at 3-5, but it was those backing Nyquist at 9-1 in the first pool that cashed on the first Saturday of May. Pool 1 closes on Sunday at 6:00 ET.
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Classic Empire is the favorite among the 22 separate betting interests at 8-1. Not This Time, the runner up in the Juvenile, was declared out of the running, his connections announcing his retirement on Monday, and wagering on the colt will be suspended.
The colt will be retired to Taylor Made Farm after a soft tissue injury to his right front foreleg was discovered.
Mastery, winner of the Bob Hope Stakes (G3) at Del Mar on Saturday is the 12-1 second choice among the separate betting interests. The colt is trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert.
Baffert has two others among the separate betting interests—Del mar Futurity winner Klimt (15-1) and impressive maiden winner Beach Bum, (15-1).
Other Kentucky Derby-winning trainers represented by horses in the pool’s 23 individual betting interests are John Shirreffs, who saddled Giacomo to win the Run for the Roses in 2005, and Graham Motion, whose conditioned 2011 winner Animal Kingdom. Shirreffs trains Jerry and Ann Moss’ Gormley, whose two victories from three races include the FrontRunner (GI) at Santa Anita. Motion conditions Isabella de Tomaso’s Irish War Cry, a son of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin and an easy winner in his career debut at Maryland’s Laurel Race Course.
Trainer Todd Pletcher, who won the 2010 Kentucky Derby with WinStar Farm’s Super Saver, has a pair of Pool 1 wagering interests in Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier and Derrick Smith’s unbeaten Fact Finding (#3, 20-1) and Eric Fein, Christopher McKenna, Harris Fein, Guri Singh and Jerry Walia’s Syndergaard, the winner of Saratoga’s Funny Cide and runner-up in the Hopeful (GI) that is named in honor of New York Mets pitching star Noah Syndergaard.
Other prominent individuals include Peacock Racing Stables LLC’s Delta Jackpot (GIII) winner Gunnevera (#5, 15-1); Janis Whitham’s unbeaten McCraken (#13, 15-1), the winner of Churchill Downs’ Street Sense; and Klaravich Stables Inc. and William Lawrence’s Hopeful (GI) winner Practical Joke (#17, 15-1).
