Laurel Park opened in 1911, and has gone through many changes in ownership and renovation throughout its long history. Laurel Park’s most famous renovation was the creation of the Sports Palace in 1985. The renovation was the first of its kind in the world of horse racing. The $2 million addition combined the look-and-feel of a casino with bold new technology that included computerized handicapping and a video race library. The facility was an immense success and has been imitated at other race tracks around the world. Laurel Park has seen many famous horses race on its track, including the legendary Barbaro, who holds the record time for 1 1/16 miles on the turf course.
