Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager closed on Sunday with the mutuel field the betting favorite at 5-2 and Texas Red the lowest price among the 23 separate betting interests, closing at 9-1.
Texas Red won last fall’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) in an upset at 13-1, but was a neck short in his three-year-old debut to Lord Nelson in the seven furlong San Vicente (G2) at Santa Anita. His next start will come in the $400,000 Risen Star (G2) at Fair Grounds on Feb. 21. The colt was listed at betting odds of 12-1 last week at Bovada.
American Pharoah closed as the second choice among the separate betting interests at 10-1 ($23.00), just edging Dortmund, who also closed at 10-1 and will pay his backers $23.40 if he wins in the Run for the Roses.
They are both trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert. American Pharoah won last year’s Del Mar Futurity (G1) and Frontrunner (G1) and was headed to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile as the early favorite but foot issues knocked him out of the race. His next start likely will come in the $750,000 Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park on March 14.
Dortmund won last Saturday’s $150,000 Robert B. Lewis (G3) at Santa Anita by a hard fought head over Firing Line. His next start likely will come in the $1 million Santa Anita Derby (G1) on April 4.
Firing Line, who has now lost photos to Dortmund in each of his last two starts closed at future betting odds of 35-1.
Carpe Diem closed at 12-1 for the Todd Pletcher barn. The colt was last seen running second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. His three-year-old debut will come in either the $350,000 Tampa Bay Derby (G3) on March 7 or the Rebel on March 14.
Upstart also closed at future betting odds of 12-1. The Rick Violette trainee won the $400,000 Holy Bull (G2) at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 24 in his last outing. Next up for the colt is the $400,000 Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 21.
