Breeders’ Cup Post Positions, Morning Line Betting Odds

The Breeders’ Cup post positions were drawn and morning line odds announced on Monday with a record 174 horse entered including the winners of the spring’s Triple Crown races and five runners that won Breeders’ Cup races last year.

The Breeders’ Cup will be held for the third consecutive year at Santa Anita on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

While two-time Breeders’ Cup winners Wise Dan and Beholder sitting it out this year, we still have five returning champions from last year’s event.

Goldencents (Dirt Mile), Dank (Filly & Mare Turf), Secret Circle (Xpressbet Sprint), and Magician (Longines Turf) are looking for repeats this year while Ria Antonia, last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Filly winner will look to win the Distaff this year.

Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner California Chrome will compete in the $5 million Classic, as will Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist and undefeated Shared Belief, setting up a showdown for Horse of the Year honors.

The older handicap division was decimated this year by injuries and retirements, with last year’s winner Mucho Macho Man and well as Game On Dude, Palace Malice and Will Take Charge on the sidelines. The top four betting choices for the Classic this year likely will be from the three-year-old division.

Horse of the Year honors will likely go to the Classic winner, and the Eclipse Award for top three-year-old is up for grabs in the Classic.

Just two of the last 13 Classic shave been won by three-year-olds, Curlin in 2007 at Monmouth park in the slop and Raven’s Pass in 2008 when Santa Anita had a synthetic surface.

The NBC Sports Network will televise the Breeders’ Cup action on Friday from 5:00 to 8:0 eastern on Friday and 3:30 to 8:00 on Saturday. NBC will broadcast the Classic in prime time at 8:00 eastern.
