The Breeders’ Cup Classic will be run on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Santa Anita Park.
The Bob Baffert trainee is coming off a victory in the Pacific Classic (G1) on Aug. 25, his sixth victory in a row. The gelding was the beaten favorite in last year’s Classic in a seventh place finish, and ran second in the race in 2011.
The gelding has never been better, and has now won 15 of his 27 career starts with earnings of $5.6 million.
Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Orb is the second choice at betting odds of 13-2. The Shug McGaughey trainee was third in the Travers (G1) at Saratoga on Aug. 24, his first start off nearly a three month break.
Fort Larned, who was scratched out of Saturday’s Woodward (G1) at Saratoga due to a hind end issue is the third choice at 7-1. Last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic champion was a disappointing fifth in the Whitney Handicap (G1) in his last outing.
His connections are pointing him to the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) at Belmont Park on Sept. 24 as his final prep for the Classic. He ran third in that race last year as his final prep for the Classic.
The 2012 Horse of the Year Wise Dan is listed at 9-1 for the Classic, but is the defending champion in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) and it seems likely he will stick to turf. He is perfect in four starts this year, all on turf.
Look for Travers winner Will Take Charge to start to drop from his 20-1, and Alpha’s price of 80-1 is certainly going to drop considerably after winning the Woodward (G1) on Saturday at Saratoga.
