The Todd Pletcher trained Pure Silver seeks to remain perfect as she takes on four foes in the $350,000 Spinaway (G1) at Saratoga on Saturday, one of four graded stakes on the 12-race card.
The Spionawy is a “Win and You’re In” race for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at Del Mar on Nov. 3.
Pure Silver is perfect in three career starts and is looking to give Pletcher his seventh win in the Spinaway and third in a row. She won the Adirondack (G2) at 6 ½ furlongs over the main track at the Spa by 9 ½ lengths.
Her main rival figures to be the Chad Brown trained Separationofpowers, who was a smart looking maiden winner in her debut, drawing clear to win by 11 ¾ lengths.
Brown and Pletcher are battling for the training title at the Spa meeting. Through Thursday Brown has 36 winners to Pletcher’s 35. Brown has runners in seven races on Saturday while Pletcher will saddle runners in nine of the 12 races on the card.
The $750,000 Woodward (G1) drew a compact field of five led by Gun Runner, who was installed as the 2-5 morning line favorite.
The Spinaway and Woodward will be televised live on the NBC Sports Network during a one hour telecast at 6:00 ET.
Supporting Saturday’s big card is the $2000,000 Glen Falls (G3) and the $300,000 Saranac (G3) which both drew fields of nine.
Let’s head out to the Spa for Saturday’s featured race of the day:
Saratoga Race 10 The Spinaway G1 Post time 6:11 ET
1 Separationofpowers 6-5
4 Pure Silver 1-1
5 Maya Malibu 8-1
3 Lady Ivanka 9-2
Separationofpowers took the field gate to wire to break her maiden in a good looking effort in her debut, drawing off to win by 11 ¾ lengths as the 9-5 betting favorite over seven foes. The $190,000 Keeneland purchase should only get better with more ground. She is by Candy Ride out of an Empire Maker mare. She drew the rail and owns solid early and mid pace numbers and Ortiz likely is going to have to send her. She still looks as if she has a ton of upside.
Pure Silver is perfect in three starts, coming back three weeks after winning the Adirondack (G2) over the main track here by 9 ½ lengths and earning the top last out Beyer (Our top pick owns the top last out BRIS figure). The $125,000 Ocala purchase broke her maiden in her debut, took the state bred Lynbrook and then won her first graded stake last out, her numbers improving with each start. Pletcher has won this race six times including last year with Sweet Loretta (in a deadheat) and in 2015 with Rachel’s Valentina.
