A Brief History of Belmont Racetrack
Since May 1902, the Belmont Park Racetrack, operated by the non-profit New York Racing Association, has been a setting for greatness. Twelve Triple Crown winners, including legendary horses like Man o’ War and Seabiscuit, have showcased their amazing talents on this “Championship Track”.
The track, located just outside New York City, was designed to be the world’s most elaborate track in America, modelled after Europe’s grand race courses and is considered to be one of the most elite racetracks in the horse racing world, in league with Saratoga, Churchill Downs (Kentucky) and Santa Anita racecourses.
In 2004, Belmont hosted the largest crowd in its history; over 120 thousand people witnessed favorite Smarty Jones upset by Birdstone in a Triple Crown bid.
Belmont Races
The Belmont Park race schedule of 2017 includes some of the most anticipated races of the New York Racing Calendar, the most prestigious being the Belmont Stakes, a 1 ½ mile race for three-year-olds.
The Belmont Stakes first took place in 1867 at Jerome Park Racetrack and since 1905, with exceptions, at Belmont Park. One of the most memorable races of all time was when Secretariat set an undefeated world record (2 min, 24 seconds) in his 1973 Belmont victory. To this day, a statue of the horse legend can be found in the paddock.
Prestigious Races to look out for:
- Jun 10: Woodford Reserve Manhattan, a 1 ¼ mile turf race for a pot of $1million
