Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager closed on Sunday, with the Bob Baffert trained duo of American Pharoah and Dortmund taking the most action among the separate betting interests. The mutuel field or “All Others” closed as the 4-1 betting favorite.
American Pharoah closed at 8-1 and will returns his backers $18.20 for each $2 wagered, the shortest price among the 22 separate betting interests. Wagering was suspended on The Great War, who failed to fire Saturday night in the $150,000 John Battaglia and his trainer Wesley Ward said after that the colt was off the Derby trail.
Close behind America Pharoah is his stablemate Dortmund, who closed at 9-1 and will return $21.60 if he is able to win the Run fort the Roses.
Both colts are trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, a three-time winner of the Kentucky Derby.
American Pharoah won the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity and Frontrunner as a juvenile and was going to be the morning line favorite for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, but a foot bruises just days before the race sent him to the sidelines.
His three-year-old debut will come in the $750,000 Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park on March 14. Baffert has won the Rebel in four of the last five years including last year with Hoppertunity.
Dortmund is undefeated in four career starts, taking the Robert B. Lewis (G3) in his last outing on Feb. 7. Baffert announced today that Dortmund would go in Saturday’s $400,000 San Felipe (G2). His final prep would then likely come in the $1 million Santa Anita Derby (G1) on April 4.
Trainer Todd Pletcher had five contenders among the 22 separate betting interests including Carpe Diem, who closed at 10-1 and will return $22.80. The colt makes his three-year-old debut in the $350,000 Tampa Bay Derby (G2) on Saturday.
There are three Derby points races coming up on Saturday. In addition to the Tampa Bay Derby, the $400,000 Gotham (G3) and $400,000 San Felipe (G2) will offer up 50-20-10-5 points toward the top four finishers.
In addition, the $200,000 Swale (G2), which was wiped out due to weather at Gulfstream Park is rescheduled for this Saturday. Pletcher’s Daredevil, who closed at 43-1 in the KDFW, was the even money favorite in the Swale but heavy rain forced the track to cancel racing half way through the card.
