Golden Gate Fields was built on the location of an old gunpowder company in 1941. Golden Gate has been the site of many great moments in horse-racing history, including Noor’s victory over Citation in the 1950 Golden Gate Handicap, and John Henry’s record-setting performance 34 years later in the same event.
Golden Gate hosted a $2 million race on California Derby Day in 1974, and it served as a replacement track for Bay Meadows for the Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby from 2001-04. Silky Sullivan has a race named here after him (The Silky Sullivan Handicap), and is the only horse buried at Golden Gate.
