The price on Kentucky Derby winner Orb in the 2013 Preakness betting odds continues to shrink, down from 8-5 to 4-5 after the latest defections from the race has reduced the possible field to nine.
Trainer Chad Brown announced that Normandy Invasion would bypass both the Preakness and the Belmont Stake and will be pointed toward $600,000 Jim Dandy at Saratoga on July 27 or the $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on July 28.
The ultimate summer goal for the colt is the $1 million Travers at Saratoga on August 24.
Normandy Invasion figured to be the second betting choice in the Preakness behind Orb after his fourth place finish in the Kentucky Derby. The colt made a move in the stretch to take over the lead but weakened to finish 3 ½ lengths behind the winner.
The Rudy Rodriguez trained Vyjack, who faded to finish a well beaten 18th in the Kentucky Derby was also declared out of the race by his trainer Rudy Rodriguez.
After the two latest defections Turf ‘n’ Sport handicapper Michael Dempsey lowered the price on Derby winner Orb to 4-5.
“I thought Normandy Invasion had the best shot of beating Orb, and without him in the race Orb is probably going to be even money on the morning line,” Dempsey said. “However, he likely gets bet down even lower on Preakness Day.”
“Toss in the rave reviews Orb is getting for that Monday morning work at Belmont Park, and we are going to have a chalky favorite,” Dempsey added
The post position draw for the Preakness Stakes is Wednesday, May 16.
