Wise Dan is the early betting favorite in the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Mile Future Odds, but that will not stop a strong contingent of talented milers from coming from overseas.
Wise Dan is listed at betting odds of 7-4 in future wagering for the Mile, which is now available at Bovada.lv.
The five-year-old will go into this year’s Mile off three straight victories, taking the Fourstardave (G2) at Saratoga in August, the Woodbine Mile (G1) in September, and then his final prep for racing’s championship event was one of his best, a good looking score in the Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) at Keeneland on Oct. 6.
Trainer by Charles Lopresti, the five-year-old is a graded stakes winner on dirt, turf, and synthetic surfaces.
He will be looking to keep the Mile title in the U.S. after Court Vision pulled off the big upset last year at Churchill Downs. The Dale Romans trainee won by a nose last year returning $131.60 to win, one of the biggest upsets in the history of the Breeders’ Cup.
He edged Turralure by a nose with three-time Mile winner Goldikova settling for third. Goldikova swept the Mile from 2008 to 2010.
Goldikova was trained by Freddie Head, who also rode Miesque, who won the Mile in back to back years in 1987 and 1988.
Head is back this year with Moonlight Cloud, who is currently listed at betting odds of 5-1 odds at Bovada.lv.
The four-year-old filly has won three of her five starts this year, her last outing a victory in the Qatar Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (G1) at Longchamp on Sept. 16.
Two back she ran fourth in the Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard-Jacques Le Marois (G1), which was won by Excelebration, who will also be making the trip across the pond for the Mile.
Excelebration is trained by Aidan O’Brien, and is listed at betting odds of 3-1, which is currently second choice behind Wise Dan.
The four-year-old colt has landed in the exacta in 11 of his 13 career starts and is a multiple Group 1 winner.
An intriguing runner in this year’s Mile is 2011 Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom, who is currently listed at odds of 8-1.
The Graham Motion trainee has made just one start this year, a win against third level allowance optional claimers at Gulfstream Park on turf back in February.
The Mile will be his first start off nearly a nine month layoff.
