Tiz the Law is the current favorite for the 2020 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Sept. 5.
Florida Derby (G1) winner Tiz the Law is the solid betting favorite in the latest 2020 Kentucky Derby future odds, currently listed at 9-2 at USRacing.
His win the Florida Derby in most years would have set him up perfectly for a top effort on the first Saturday of May, and the race has been a key prep in recent years for the Run for the Roses.
Barbaro (2006), Big Brown (2008), Orb (2013), Nyquist (2016), Always Dreaming (2017) and Maximum Security (2019) came out of the Florida Derby to cross the wire first in the Kentucky Derby. All got to keep the roses except for the last guy, who was disqualified for interference and now his trainer Jason Servis is looking at jail time.
Tiz the Law’s trainer Barclay Tagg is no stranger to Churchill Downs, winning the Derby with the popular New York gelding Funny CIde in 2003.
Things are a little more complicated for Tagg this year with the Kentucky Derby now postponed until the first Saturday of September due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
The colt is first in the Road to the Kentucky Derby points standings with 122 points, so he has a spot in the field.
2020 Florida Derby Replay
How the colt will get to Louisville in September is anyone’s guess. His connections have said the Arkansas Derby (G2) on May 2 is out. So we could see him in the Wood Memorial in New York, or perhaps the Haskell Invitational (G1) at Monmouth Park or the Travers (G1) at Saratoga, which seems likely to get moved to earlier in the meeting so it could be used as a Derby prep.
“He is something special. It would be a lot of fun going to Kentucky in five weeks, but that’s not happening, obviously,” the colt’s owner Jack Knowlton from Sackatoga Stable said. “Now we get to run some more races. Maybe the Wood will come back in play. Maybe we can do a Travers-Derby double. Right now, it’s a blank slate. Nobody knows what’s going to happen where or when with all that’s going on in the country.”
The colt earned a 96 Beyer Speed Figure for his win in the Florida Derby. He has now won four of his five career starts with earnings of $945,300.
Baffert Loaded for Derby
Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has the next three contenders in early Kentucky Derby wagering at USRacing.
The current second choice is Charlatan at 6-1. The colt won a first level allowance race at Santa Anita by better than 10 lengths with a 106 Beyer. His next start likely will come in the Arkansas Derby on May 2.
Nadal is listed at 8-1 at USRacing in early Derby wagering. The colt won the Rebel (G2) at Oaklawn Park on Mach 14 with a 96 Beyer. He is also being pointed toward the Arkansas Derby.
Authentic is the co-third with his stablemate Nadal at 8-1. The colt won the San Felipe (G2) at Santa Anita on March 7 with a 96 Beyer. Baffert was pointing him to the Santa Anita Derby. It seems doubtful the trainer would send all three of his colts to Hot Springs, but there are limited tracks open at this point.
