We are just over a week away from the 145th running of the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Roadster is the slight betting favorite in what appears to be a wide-open race.
The Bob Baffert trainee is coming off a victory in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) on April 6 and is currently at betting odds of 13-2 at USRacing.
The son of Quality Road and out of a Silver Ghost mare was a $525,000 Keeneland purchase and earned a 98 Beyer Speed Figure in his Santa Anita Derby win. His other try in stakes company was a third in the Del Mar Futurity (G1) last September.
Omaha Beach is the second choice in early Kentucky Derby betting at USRacing at 7-1 and it would be no surprise to see him go off as the actual betting favorite on the first Saturday of May.
The colt followed up his Rebel (G2) win with a victory in the Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park on April 13. The colt earned a 101 Beyer in his last win.
Trained by Richard Mandella, it took five tries to break his maiden and he is now perfect in his two starts in stakes company. Owned by Fox Hill Farms, he is by War Front out of a Seeking the Gold mare.
Juvenile Champ Game Winner at 15-2.
Baffert has the third choice in early Derby wagering at USRacing with Game Winner at 15-2. The colt was perfect last year in four starts, capping off his Eclipse Award winning campaign by winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) at Churchill Downs.
The colt has lost both of his starts this year, a nose loss to Omaha Beach in the Rebel and a half-length loss in the Santa Anita Derby to his stablemate Roadster.
Next in line in the betting at 9-1 are Maximum Security and Improbable.
Maximum Security broke his maiden for a $16,000 tag and after winning a couple of starter optional claiming races won the Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park in gate to wire fashion, earning a 101 Beyer.
Improbable is a third Baffert trainee, and like his stablemate Game Winner he was undefeated as a juvenile and winless as a three-year-old.
He won his three starts last year including the Los Alamitos Futurity (G1). He ran second in the split Rebel behind Long Range Toddy and then was second behind Omaha Beach in the Arkansas Derby.
Wood Memorial (G2) winner Tacitus is next in the early Kentucky Derby wagering at USRacing at 10-1.
The betting favorite has won each of the last six editions of the Kentucky Derby and 10 of the last 19 runnings.
