With the Kentucky Derby (G1) just over a month away Tiz the Law remains the early wagering favorite, with his price drifting upward slightly from 3-2 back in June to his current price of 2-1.
There was one Road to the Kentucky Derby points race over the weekend, with Honor A.P. upset in the Shared Belief at Del Mar. Thousand Words took the field gate to wire to pull off the upset, returning $20.40.
The Bob Baffert trainee is sitting at 66-1 in early Kentucky Derby wagering at BUSR but expect that price to drift downward over the next few days. The colt earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 104. The colt’s previous high speed figure was the 91 he earned in winning the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) last December.
“I thought he had a chance to win today,” Baffert said. “I could tell he was a different horse down here. His whole mind changed. His color changed. He had soured out on me, but we got him going the right way. I think he earned his way to the Derby.”
The colt earned 50 Derby points and is now sitting in seventh place in the Road to the Kentucky Derby points race with 83.
Honor A.P. was 5-1 in early Derby wagering at BUSR on June 23 and is still the second choice at 9-2. The John Shirreffs trainee earned a 102 Beyer winning the Santa Anita Derby (G1) in his previous outing and matched that number in his runner up finish in the Shared Belief.

Baffert’s Uncle Chuck is now the co-third choice in early Kentucky Derby future wagering at BUSR at 8-1. The colt won the Los Alamitos Derby (G3) and earned 20 Derby points, placing him 22nd in the points standings. The colt will attempt to lock in a starting spot in Louisville on Saturday when he goes in the Travers (G1) at Saratoga.
Authentic, winner of the Haskell Invitational (G1) at Monmouth Park and Art Collector, the winner of the Toyota Blue Grass (G2) at Keeneland are the other contenders currently listed at 8-1 at BUSR.
The Todd Pletcher trained Dr Post, who was third in the Haskell is next at 14-1 followed by Cezanne at 20-1. The Baffert trainee was a disappointing fourth and last in the Shared Belief on Saturday.
Saturday’s Travers at the Spa will offer up 100-40-20-10 Derby points. Sunday’s Ellis Park Derby is worth 50-20-10-5 points. The final points race is the Pegasus at Monmouth Park on Aug. 15 with 20-8-4-2 points up for grabs.
