In the latest odds for the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at BUSR Maximum Security is still sitting as the betting favorite at 7-2 while his stablemate Improbable is currently a generous 12-1.
Those odds may not last long after Improbable rolled over his stablemate on Saturday afternoon in the $300,000 Awesome Again (G1) at Santa Anita. The race is a Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” race although both had already qualified for the race.
Maximum Security was sent off as the betting favorite in the Awesome Again, but it was Improbable who scored an impressive 4 ½ length victory, returning $5.60.
The Bob Baffert trainee, who was the beaten favorite in last year’s Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1) has now won three Grade 1 races in a row. He came into today’s race off victories in the Gold Cup at Santa Anita and the Whitney.
Now the colt will head to Keeneland as a major player for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, and by Sunday morning his 12-1 early Breeders’ Cup Classic odds at BUSR will likely be much shorter.
Maximum Security took much of the betting action in the Awesome Again but was no match for the winner. The colt suffered his first loss since going from the indicted Jason Servis to Baffert.
“I knew I was coming in here with two really good horses,” Baffert said. “Maximum Security was in that scrum and they were really running up close. I saw Drayden, he knew what was happening, so he just sat back. He rode a great race, he knew what was going on, he took his time, rode him with patience. He’s had good luck with this horse. He loves this track. He seems to be better in the gate here that’s why we ran him here. I hate to see my horses have to beat the other horse, but ‘Max’ ran gallantly. He fended off the speed but the next one is the big one, but today it was all about Improbable.”

Baffert also trains the second choice in early Breeders’ Cup Classic betting at BUSR in Authentic at 4-1. The colt has won four of his five starts, taking the Haskell Invitational (G1) and Kentucky Derby (G1) in his last two outings.
Tiz the Law is the current third choice in early Classic betting at 9-2. The Barclay Tagg trainee won three Grade 1 races in a row this year, the Florida Derby, Belmont Stakes and Travers. He came up short in a runner up finish in the Kentucky Derby.
His connections elected to skip the Preakness Stakes and point straight to the Classic.
Tom’s D’etat is the fourth choice in Classic wagering at BUSR at 10-1. The Al Stall trainee was third in the Whitney at Saratoga in his last outing. That loss snapped a four-race winning streak that included the Clark (G1) and Stephen Foster (G2) at Churchill Downs and the Fayette (G2) at Keeneland.
