The last Derby prep points race was Saturday night’s $175,000 Derby Trial (G3) which was won by Forty Tales, but trainer Todd Pletcher said he has no intention of bringing the colt back next Saturday for the Run for the Roses.
On Monday morning trainer Bob Baffert announced that Govenor Charlie and Code West would pass on the Run for the Roses, and trainer Todd Pletcher announced that Winning Cause, winning of the Toyota Blue Grass (G1) on April 20 would also bypass the Kentucky Derby.
Then later in the day the connections of Tiz a Minister announced they too would be bypassing the Run for the Roses.
It was good news for the connections of Golden Soul, who has been working at Churchill Downs. Trainer Dallas Stewart had been hoping he could get the colt into the Derby field. The colt checked in fourth in the Louisiana Derby (G2) in his last outing.
In addition, later Monday afternoon trainer Mike Maker announced that Fear the Kitten would be entered in the Derby. Fifth in the Toyota Blue Grass (G1) in his last start, the colt has won two of seven starts and has six points.
The colt was third in the LeComte (G3) at Fair Grounds and was the runner up in the Southwest (G3) at Oaklawn Park earlier this year.
Maker will give Alan Garcia a leg up on Saturday.
