Thunder Snow has taken over the lead in the Road to the Kentucky Derby points standings with his game win in Saturday’s $2 million UAE Derby (G2) at Meydan Race Course.
The colt beat Japan’s Epicharis by a head in an exciting finish. The duo both likely will make the trip to Louisville.
Epicharis picked up 40 Derby points for his runner up finish and had already stamped his ticket to the Run for the Roses with his victory in the Hyacinth Stakes at Tokyo Race Course on Feb. 19.
Thunder Snow was ridden to victory by jockey Christophe Soumillon. “He got scared twice of the screen. I could feel when we came into the last turn, he put his nose completely on the left. He did not turn left. And when I came into the straight, he was just waiting for that screen,” the jockey said after the race.
“So I was trying to get him to concentrate. And fortunately, when I arrived at the 150m marker, he just saw the marks from the gates on the ground. He got scared, he changed legs and he stopped.
“He hangs and I tried to keep him to concentrate. I knew it wasn’t finished. I thought ‘you are doing it to me again’, he was really giving it hard to me. I thought you never know, he might come back again. And he did. Today he showed me he was still a bit immature.”
UAE Derby Replay:
The win gave Godolphin their eighth win in the UAE Derby.
Fast and Accurate pulled off the upset in the $500,000 Spiral Stakes (G3) at Turfway Park and picked up 50 points, but is not currently Triple Crown nominated.
