Mike’s Free Selections for Friday Oct. 31:
Santa Anita Race 5 The Damascus (1:45 ET)
- No.2 Midnight Hawk 7-2
- No.6 Magic Mark 8-1
- No.7 Declassify 6-1
- No.3 Chitu 4-1
Midnight Hawk is one of three in here sent out by the Bob Baffert barn and they are all coming back off the shelf. Our top pick is making his first start since coming up just a nose short in the Illinois Derby (G3) at Hawthorne back in April. He mixed it up in several key Derby preps, , landing third in the Robert B. Lewis (G2) behind Candy Boy and Chitu and was no match for California Chrome in the San Felipe (G2) in a runner up finish. The colt has posted sharp work after sharp work and looks ready to fire for a barn that is 30% winners (with a +ROI) with runners coming back off a +180 day layoff. He broke his maiden at today’s seven furlong distance in his debut over the fake stuff at Hollywood Park.
Magic Mark is making his first start since July for the Ron Ellis barn that is 48% winners (with a +ROI) with runners coming back off a 61-180 day layoff. He ran big here passing his first two allowance conditions back in the spring. Among the horses he beat in that Alw-2 win was Big Cazanova, who came back to beat Alw-2 foes in his next start at Del mar and then ran eighth in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1). The Ellis trainee set the early fractions and weakened to finish third in the American Flag at Los Al as the beaten favorite in his last outing. A solid looking work tab and he returns to his favorite surface, having won four of his five starts here.
WIN: #2 to win at 5-2 or better.
EX: 2,6 / 2,3,6,7
TRI: 2,6 / 2,3,6,7 / 2,3,6,7,11
