Mike’s Free Selections for Saturday May 25:

Belmont Park Race 4 Clm $30,000B  (2:38 ET)

  • No.1 Tape It   10-1
  • No.6 Leilani’s Ticket   2-1
  • No.7 Brother Bob    5-1
  • No.2 All Jonesy   7-2

Race Analysis:

Tape It ships back from Keeneland where last out the colt checked in third on poly against straight three year olds for a $20,000 tag. The colt was claimed out of the race by the Adsit barn that is showing a 0 for 3 mark first off the claim. She is a former assistant to Linda Rice. The colt makes his third start of his current form cycle and looks well spotted here facing $30,000 non-winners of two or three year olds. Decent value if this guy goes off near his 10-1 morning line. Also bred to love a wet track and we may see some rain today.
Leilani’s Ticket stalked the early pace and had no punch left in the stretch in a fifth place finish against Alw-1 state breds last out. Two back this guy was a game second at the Big A sandwiched between a pair of next out winners. The winner Hay Shares beat state bred Alw-2 foes in his next outing on May 9 here. The colt fits well here but the price is short and he does have a habit of landing in the bottom half of the exacta.

Churchill Downs Race 5 Alw $52,000N1X  (2:51 ET)

  • No.6 By Golly Molly    12-1
  • No.2 Oscar Party   6-1
  • No.7 Bargain Blitz   4-1
  • No.11 Assets of War   10-1

Race Analysis:

By Golly Molly makes her first start since running fifth in the Busanda on the inner track at the Big A. The filly stumbled coming out of the gate and was not much of a threat, landing 13 lengths behind repeat winner Princess of Sylmar, who has won twice since including winning the Kentucky Oaks (G1) on May 3. Since breaking her maiden in her debut our top pick has run into repeat winners in each of her last four starts. She ran well on poly so hoping it translates to turf. She is by Afleet Alex out of a Black Tie Affair mare that has dropped five other winners including one turf winner. The barn is 33% winners (with a +ROI) moving runners from dirt to turf.
Oscar Party makes her first start since running 14th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) last fall. She won the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Fillies in her first go against winners and has popped a couple of near bullet morning drills for the Catalano barn that is 22% winners with runners coming back off a +180 day layoff. She has a nice pedigree, out of the turf stakes winner Dream Lady ($230,030) and a half to stakes winner Major Gain ($137,605)
