Created by a partnership that included actors Bing Crosby and Jimmy Durante, Del Mar opened its door in 1937. Aside from its famous owners Del Mar becamse well-known after hosting a famous one-off race between Seabiscuit and Ligaroti, which was the first race televised on NBC. Crosby held his first Bing Crosby Handicap in1946, and the track was one of the most famous of the Post-WWII era.
Del Mar has undergone extensive renovations since its opening, especially in the 1990s, which made way for the Grade One Pacific Classic and its $1,000,000 purse. Opening Day at Del Mar is one of the most anticipated events in horse racing, with close to 40,000 in attendance for this event.
